documentary

The Foundation has completed a seventeen-minute documentary short chronicling Tsai’s life and work entitled, ‘TSAI: Feedback Control’.  The documentary was filmed and produced by Lun-Yi London Tsai; written and edited by Sophie Hamacher.  With interviews of nearly two dozen of Tsai’s contemporaries (artists, art historians, curators, writers, friends, etc.), our goal was to weave a narrative with archived footage, images, writings, and new videos of his cybernetics sculptures.  The film will give viewers a sense of Tsai’s pioneering achievement in the post-war era in which he used science and technology to make interactive artworks, which continue to mesmerize people to this day. We have future hopes of expanding on this documentary and making it available to museums and institutions to further detail the obstacles Tsai as a Chinese immigrant coming to America had to overcome and his successes.
